Quick answer: what does vehicle tracking cost?
A working tracking setup in South Africa breaks down into four numbers:
- Hardware: R499 – R1,499 once-off
- Monthly subscription: R45 – R350+ per month
- Installation: R0 (self-install) up to R1,500 (professional)
- Contract: 0 to 36 months, depending on who you go with
Total three-year cost for one vehicle can land anywhere between R2,100 and R15,000+. The rest of this guide unpacks why that range is so wide — and how to land at the bottom of it.
Average vehicle tracking costs in South Africa
Here's roughly what you'll see quoted across the South African market in 2026.
GPS tracker hardware
- Entry-level (OBD plug-in): R400 – R600
- Mid-range (hardwired 4G): R700 – R1,200

- Device swap or transfer: R300 – R800
What's actually in a "R150 / month" package?
When you see an entry-level monthly fee on a traditional provider's site, it's worth checking what's not in the box.
Basic package (R150 – R250 / month)
- ✓ Real-time GPS location
- ✓ Basic trip history (7 – 30 days)
- ✓ Mobile app
- ✓ Stolen vehicle recovery
- ✗ Geofencing (add R50+ / month)
- ✗ Detailed reports (add R50+ / month)
- ✗ Multiple user access (add R30+ / month)
Standard package (R250 – R350 / month)
- ✓ Everything in basic
- ✓ Geofencing (limited zones)
- ✓ Basic alerts (speeding, power disconnect)
- ✓ 90-day history
- ✗ Advanced reports (add R80+ / month)
- ✗ Driver behaviour monitoring (add R100+ / month)
- ✗ Fuel monitoring (add R150+ / month)
Premium package (R350 – R500 / month)
- ✓ Everything in standard
- ✓ Unlimited geofencing
- ✓ Advanced alerts and reports
- ✓ Driver behaviour (FMC920/880)
- ✓ Unlimited history
- ✗ CANBUS data (requires a hardware upgrade)
These rates are usually locked in over a 36-month contract. Over three years that works out to:
- Basic: R5,400 – R9,000
- Standard: R9,000 – R12,600
- Premium: R12,600 – R18,000
And that's before installation and activation charges land on the first invoice.
Why monthly fees are so high in the first place
GPS trackers aren't expensive to run. A device uses about 100MB of data a month — the SIM card and server hosting together cost the provider somewhere in the region of R30 – R50 per device. So where does the rest of the R250+ monthly fee go?
The actual operating cost:
- Server hosting and data storage: ~R5 – R8 / month per vehicle
- SIM card and mobile data: ~R15 – R25 / month
- Platform maintenance: ~R3 – R5 / month
- Customer support: ~R5 – R10 / month
The rest of the bill:
- Hardware subsidy (financed inside the monthly fee for 36 months): R50 – R100 / month
- Sales commissions: R20 – R40 / month
- Marketing: R15 – R30 / month
- Profit margin: R50 – R150+ / month
The contract model isn't just buying you tracking — it's financing the entire sales and marketing machine that sold you the contract. That's the part TTC strips out.
Hidden fees to watch for
Before you sign anything, ask about these. Most providers will list them on a separate fee schedule that doesn't appear in the main quote.
1. Activation and setup
Charged at R200 – R500 (sometimes waived as a promotion). Covers account creation and SIM activation — costs the provider about R10. Pick a provider with no activation fee.
2. Installation
R650 – R1,500 per vehicle. Usually 30 – 60 minutes of work plus basic wiring. Self-install is often a real option on plug-and-play OBD devices, and fleets can negotiate bulk rates.
3. Early cancellation
R500 – R2,000+, or whatever's left of the 36-month contract. The penalty is high because cancelling early breaks the hardware financing plan. Month-to-month providers don't charge it.
4. Feature unlocks
R50 – R200 / month per feature. Most commonly: geofencing, detailed reports, multiple users. Pick a provider that includes every feature in the base price.
5. Device transfer or swap
R300 – R800 per transfer. Charged when you sell a vehicle and want the tracker moved to a new one. Doesn't apply if you own the hardware — you (or an auto electrician) move it yourself.
6. "Priority" support
R150 – R300 / month for upgraded support. Support should be included in the subscription. If it isn't, that's a tell.
7. Data export and custom reports
R100 – R500 for a report or data dump. Standard reports and exports should be included.
8. Platform "upgrade" fees
R50 – R150 / month to access a newer platform version. This is usually just a software update relabelled as an upgrade. Confirm all updates are included for the life of the subscription.
Two pricing models: contract vs ownership
Strip everything else away and you're really comparing two models. Here's a like-for-like over 36 months on one vehicle.
Option A — traditional contract model
Month 0:
- Hardware: R0 (built into the monthly fee)
- Installation: R0 (typically "waived")
- Activation: R0 (typically "waived")
- Upfront cost: R0
Months 1 – 36:
- Monthly fee: R299
- Total over 36 months: R10,764
Plus the fees the brochure didn't mention:
- Geofencing unlock (R50 / month × 36): R1,800
- Device transfer (two vehicle changes): R600
- Early cancellation if you want out: R1,500
Realistic total over three years: R13,164. At the end of it, you don't own the hardware.
Option B — hardware ownership model (TTC)
Month 0:
- Hardware: R769 (4G900L tracker — yours from day one)
- Installation: R0 if self-installed, or quote-on-request for professional fitting
- Annual subscription: R540 paid up-front
- Upfront cost: R1,309 (self-install)
Months 1 – 36:
- Subscription: R540 / year (R45 / month equivalent)
- Total over 36 months: R1,620
Total over three years: R2,389 self-installed. Hardware is yours — no transfer fees, no cancellation penalties, no feature unlocks.
Saving on one vehicle over 36 months: roughly R10,775.
3-year worked example: year by year
Year 1
Traditional provider: Hardware R0 (financed), installation R950, monthly fee R299 × 12 = R3,588. Year 1 total: R4,538.
TTC: Hardware R769, installation R0 (self-install), annual subscription R540. Year 1 total: R1,309.
Year 1 saving: R3,229.
Year 2
Traditional provider: Monthly fee R299 × 12 = R3,588, plus geofencing unlock R50 × 12 = R600. Year 2 total: R4,188.
TTC: Annual subscription R540 (all features included). Year 2 total: R540.
Year 2 saving: R3,648.
Year 3
Traditional provider: Monthly fee R299 × 12 = R3,588, plus a device transfer fee of R600 when the vehicle is sold. Year 3 total: R4,188.
TTC: Annual subscription R540. Transfer the device yourself for free. Year 3 total: R540.
Year 3 saving: R3,648.
Three-year total
- Traditional provider: R12,914
- TTC: R2,389
- Saving: R10,525
Fleet maths: 10 vehicles over 36 months
The savings get harder to ignore at fleet scale.
Traditional provider, 10 vehicles, 36 months
- Hardware: R0 (built into monthly fee)
- Installation: R8,000 (R800 × 10, sometimes "waived")
- Monthly subscription: R2,800 (R280 × 10)
- 36-month subscription total: R100,800
- Add-ons (reporting, extra users): R10,800
- Total: R111,600+
TTC, 10 vehicles, 36 months
- Hardware: R7,690 (R769 × 10)
- Installation: R0 (self-install or quote-on-request)
- Monthly subscription: R500 (R50 × 10)
- 36-month subscription total: R18,000
- Add-ons: R0 (everything included)
- Total: R25,690
Fleet saving: R85,910 – R93,910 over three years. Enough for eleven more trackers with change. SVR is a separate R40 / month per device if you want it added.
Is stolen vehicle recovery worth paying extra for?
SVR is an optional add-on to a tracking package. It pays for 24/7 control room monitoring and a coordinated response if your vehicle is stolen.
- TTC: R40 / month (R480 / year) on top of your tracking subscription
- Traditional providers: usually bundled at R250 – R450 / month
- SVR-only packages (no live tracking): typically from ~R99 / month
What you're paying for:
- 24/7 control room monitoring
- Theft alert response
- Coordination with SAPS and recovery teams
- Nationwide and cross-border recovery
- Battery disconnect and tow alerts
When it's worth it: high-value vehicles (R300k+), high-risk areas, commercial vehicles like trucks and delivery vans, no secure parking at home, or an insurer that gives you a premium discount that offsets the cost.
When basic tracking on its own is enough: low-risk suburbs, older vehicles, secure parking, personal use where you'll notice theft straight away.
Three-year cost of tracking + SVR:
- Traditional bundle: ~R450 / month × 36 = R16,200
- TTC tracking + SVR: R1,020 / year × 3 = R3,060
- SVR-included saving: roughly R13,000+ over three years.
Choosing the right package
A quick decision framework:
- Cheapest possible setup: OBD Mini (R499) + tracking (R540 / year) = R1,039 in year one. Best for personal vehicles or temporary tracking.
- Best value for most people: 4G900L (R769) + tracking (R540 / year) = R1,309 in year one. Live tracking, SVR-ready, optional engine cut-off.
- Advanced features: FMC920 (R999) + tracking (R540 / year) = R1,539 in year one. Driver safety, advanced alerts, fleet-grade reporting.
- Harsh environments: FMC880 (R1,199) + tracking (R540 / year) = R1,739 in year one. Weatherproof — built for farm, plant, and outdoor installs.
- Add SVR: +R480 / year on top of any of the above for 24/7 monitoring.
- Fleets (2+ vehicles): same hardware options on monthly or annual billing at R50 / month per vehicle. Volume pricing on request.
The bottom line
The tracking industry has trained South African vehicle owners to expect "free" hardware and a R150 – R300 monthly fee — while burying thousands of rands in long-term costs and lock-in.
GPS trackers aren't expensive to make or to run. What's expensive is the traditional model: sales teams, call centres, marketing budgets, and 36-month contracts built to recover all of it.
If you own the hardware and pay a flat subscription, you get the same technology — usually with no feature paywalls — for a fraction of the cost. That's the model TTC sells. There's no contract, no admin, no surprise fee on year two.
Common questions about vehicle tracking costs
Why don't you offer monthly payments for the hardware?
Because the moment we did, we'd have to bake it into the monthly fee and lock you into a contract to recover it — which is exactly the model we're trying to replace. Keeping hardware and subscription separate is what lets you cancel at any time and own your tracker outright.
Can I really install it myself?
The OBD Mini takes 30 seconds — it plugs into the diagnostic port (the same socket your mechanic uses for fault codes). Hardwired devices need 12V power and a ground, which most car-savvy people can do. If you'd rather not, professional installation is available and we can quote on request.
What if I want to cancel after six months?
You stop paying. There's no contract to break, no termination fee, and no admin. The hardware is yours — you can keep it on a shelf, move it to a different vehicle, or sell it on.
Do I really get every feature on the R50 / month plan?
Yes. Live tracking, unlimited geofences, trip history, reports, mobile apps, sub-accounts, and alerts via email or push are all included at every level. The only optional add-on is SVR (R40 / month per device) for 24/7 monitored response.
How are you this much cheaper than the big providers?
Three reasons. You buy the hardware up front instead of financing it inside a monthly fee. We don't run sales commissions or large call centres. And we don't hide features behind paywalls or tier upgrades. The maths is the maths — there's no catch.
What's the catch?
Honestly: you pay more upfront. Hardware is R499 to R1,199 depending on the device. After about 12 months you've broken even compared to a contract, and after 36 months you're saving R10,000+ per vehicle. If the upfront cost works for you, the model works for you.
